Tuesday was 90s night at PPG Paints Arena, as the Penguins finally snapped a six game losing streak with a convincing 7-3 victory against the Ottawa Senators. There were Beanie Babies and Nintendo stations in the concourse, retro graphics and pop culture references on social media, and even homage paid to former Public Address Announcer John Barbaro, and former Organist Vince Lascheid.
The Penguins played some great highlight videos throughout the game, many featuring Lemieux and Jagr, but there is one 90s memory I want to make sure wasn't forgotten by fans in Pittsburgh.
The Philadelphia Flyers came to the Igloo on March 7, 1998, and what ensued was one of the most memorable hits in Penguins history, as cult hero Darius Kasparaitis leveled Flyers Captain Eric Lindros.
I understand why the Penguins didn't show this video last night. You never want to highlight a play that resulted in injury, even if it was a perfectly clean hit by Kaspar. Keep your head up, Eric.
Eric Lindros was all the things Flyers fans accuse Sidney Crosby of being: an overrated cry baby who had his father whine his way off of two different hockey teams before he ever even skated his first shift in the NHL.
Sidney Crosby has three Stanley Cups. Lindros once sat out a whole season with the boo-boo face after Bobby Clarke wouldn't trade him to Toronto. Remembering this is crucial to any 90s Penguins fan experience. Keep that in mind the next time some orange clad mouth breather tries to tell you how soft Sidney Crosby is.
