The #Pens should name a number one goalie when one pulls away, not before

In theory, playing one goalie more than the other makes sense. In practicality, not so much.

Sports are the ultimate meritocracy. You’re supposed to earn what you get.

Tristan Jarry has lost his last three starts. In his last 10, he’s got a save percentage of .908. In that span, he’s gone 5-5.

Matt Murray has lost his last three starts. Murray has a .909 save percentage in his last 10. In that span, he’s gone 5-4-1.

I’m all for the Penguins playing the hot goalie.

Wait, who’s the hot goalie?

I’m all for getting a guy into a rhythm. Who do you choose, though?

The plan should be to alternate them until someone has a stand out performance. When that guy does, you stick him out there for another start and see if he can build off of it. I think it’s pretty simple.

The problem is that neither one of these dudes has distinguished themselves of late. Sure, Jarry has a .924 save percentage this season and has been better overall.

Murray, though, has won two championships and his play in March last year is maybe the reason the Penguins even made the playoffs.

I don’t see how a starter can be appointed until someone grabs this by the reigns. Until then, keep alternating.
