Sure, the Pens have depth, but do they have enough top-six talent?

The Penguins are a deep hockey club. By my count, when Nick Bjugstad and Zach Aston-Reese come back, they'll have 14 NHL capable forwards on their roster.

How many of them are legit top-six players?

For my money, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jason Zucker, and Bryan Rust are the only four guys that can consistently contribute as top-six scorers. Patric Hornqvist is more of a middle-six guy than top-six, I think, but he's been consistent when healthy this year. After that, it gets dicey.

Brandon Tanev has one goal in his last 17 games. Jared McCann has just four points and zero goals in the last 15 games. I really like the additions of Patrick Marleau and Conor Sheary, but neither player will light the world on fire.

Sheary is going to play on Crosby's right wing, but he's finished just 9 times this year. Marleau can chip in on offense, but he's got 10 goals. Neither player is going to be confused for Alex Ovechkin.

The Penguins have dropped four straight games, and have scored just six goals in the process. Ask anybody in the Pens dressing room and they'll tell you that they deserved better in their last two losses. They outshot the Kings 36-22.

Perhaps they're just in a slump, and the scoring will come around. My worry, though, is that they have a lot of middle-six depth, but not a lot of top end finishers.
