The Pittsburgh Penguins started last season with something called Greg McKegg centering their third line. Then it was Riley Sheahan. Then it was Derick Brassard.
Thank God that period is over. The Penguins have found their third line center and his name is Jared McCann. He's scored 5 goals in 13 games. He's got first round pedigree as he was drafted 27th overall.
Mike Sullivan said last night that the more he scores, the more McCann's confidence will grow. I know he won't continue to score at this clip, but he sure can shoot the puck. I love his speed. The guy can fly. I noticed it a handful of times during the outdoor game. He's also positionally sound, and a good/smart defensive player.
More than anything else: He's willing and appreciative to have the role. He's not going to complain the way that Brassard did. McCann has made the best out of the same hand that was dealt to Brassard.
He's played left wing with Bjugstad at center. He's played some center himself. He's comfortable in multiple roles. I'd put him at 3C.
I'm not sure if the Penguins are going to make the playoffs. I am sure that for the first time in a year in a half that if they do, their third line will have made a big difference.
