The American Diabetes Association is inviting riders, runners and walkers to join the celebration and be part of the Stop Diabetes® movement by taking part in our first Tour de Cure: Ride.Run.Walk ® event happening on this Saturday, September 15th starting and finishing at Pittsburgh South Shore Riverfront Park (in Southside Works). For the first time, the Association’s cycling ride, walk and diabetes Expo will be combined to help raise funds to change the future of diabetes and help stop this devastating disease.
The 2018 Pittsburgh Tour de Cure: Ride. Run. Walk. allows participants to choose between a 5K Fun Run, 5K Walk, or 12/30/63 mile cycling routes. Six hundred anticipated participants will be greeted by a start/finish line festival including delicious and healthy food options, the UPMC Wellness Village, live entertainment, family activities and more! Community members are encouraged to join us for this one day extravaganza, uniting the entire diabetes community.
The goal is to bring together friends, families, diabetes warriors, and volunteers to be a part of the Tour de Cure. Individuals and teams composed of co-workers, family and friends are helping raise funds for the 30.3 million Americans who have diabetes. While an estimated 23.1 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, another 7.2 million people are unaware that they have the disease. If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050.
“Diabetes is a deadly disease that affects 400,000 residents of Western Pennsylvania,” said Dan Adamski, Managing Director of JLL and Corporate Chair of the Pittsburgh Tour de Cure. “The American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure: Ride.Run.Walk. is an exciting new way for corporate teams, community members and families to come together and help raise money to change the future of diabetes.” Funds raised by Tour de Cure contribute to research funding that the American Diabetes Association gives to local scientists who are discovering new ways to prevent, manage and minimize complications for people loving with type 1, type 2, gestational and prediabetes, with the hope that soon a cure will be discovered.
Tour de Cure: Ride. Run. Walk. also provides an opportunity for community members to come together for a fun, healthy activity. It’s an event for anyone who wants to support the Association’s mission and raise critical funds that will help Stop Diabetes.
