Ohiopyle-Stewart Volunteer Fire Department Hosts 77th Annual Buckwheat Supper & Festival
Beloved Fundraiser Supports Local Fire Services in Pennsylvania’s Most Visited State Park Region
Ohiopyle, PA – (October 3, 2025) – The Ohiopyle-Stewart Volunteer Fire Department invites the public to its 77th Annual Buckwheat Supper & Festival, a cherished community tradition featuring live music, local vendors, and a hearty, home-cooked meal. The event will be held October 10–11 from 9 AM to 7 PM, and Sunday, October 12 from 9 AM to 2 PM at 17 Sherman Street, Ohiopyle, PA 15470.
Founded in 1948 and officially chartered in 1950, the Ohiopyle-Stewart Volunteer Fire Department has served generations of residents and visitors in the Laurel Highlands. This annual fundraiser helps sustain vital emergency services for the over one million tourists who explore Ohiopyle State Park each year.
Guests can enjoy an all-you-can-eat meal of buckwheat cakes and/or pancakes, one piece of sausage, home-fried potatoes, applesauce, pickles, and their choice of coffee or milk. Meal prices are $13 for adults, $6 for children ages 3–12, and free for children under 3. Fresh apple cider will also be available —pressed onsite by our firemen and volunteers using a homemade cider press—is a highlight of the weekend. This year, over 20,000 pounds of apples will be used to create this crisp, delicious fall favorite. Please note: cider is a separate purchase.
What’s a buckwheat cake?
Buckwheat cakes are hearty, slightly nutty pancakes made from buckwheat flour—a traditional Appalachian favorite known for its rich flavor and satisfying texture. They’re naturally gluten-free and especially popular in fall and winter for their warm, rustic taste.
Meals will be served in both the Community Center and the Firehall on Friday and Saturday. At the Community Center, pancakes are cooked right on the stage—giving guests a front-row seat to the action. Come and eat with us and be served by our dedicated middle and high school volunteers, who bring energy and hometown pride to every plate.
Takeout meals are available for those who prefer not to dine in. Visitors can also browse a selection of Ohiopyle-Stewart Fire Department t-shirts and sweatshirts, along with locally sourced honey, nuts, and maple syrup. A community bake sale will offer homemade treats lovingly prepared and donated by local volunteers—perfect for dessert or to take home.
“All proceeds from the Buckwheat Supper go directly toward maintaining our vehicles, upgrading equipment, and supporting the operations of our volunteer fire department,” said Fire Chief Rob Joseph. “This event is more than a meal—it’s a celebration of community, service, and tradition.”
The festival will feature local artisans, family-friendly entertainment, and live music throughout the weekend. A special appearance by Smokey Bear is scheduled for Friday at 10 AM—perfect for kids and families eager to learn about fire safety and snap a photo with a beloved icon.
Visitors are encouraged to come hungry and stay for the vibrant fall foliage—Ohiopyle’s October colors are a favorite among leaf peepers, offering breathtaking views of the Youghiogheny River Gorge and surrounding mountains. After your meal, take a short stroll to witness the power and beauty of Ohiopyle Falls or enjoy the serene cascade of Cucumber Falls—two of the region’s most iconic natural landmarks.
